A Trip to the Airport

So, my mom flew in to stay with us for a while, so we had to go pick her up from the airport. Her flight arrived at 2:15, so we needed to leave the house at 1:45 in order to be there on time.

It's been about a week and a half now since this happened, and I have finally reached the "you'll-laugh-about-it-later" stage of this event.

Now, if Travis had been the one to go pick her up, his schedule would have looked something like this:

11:30am - Feed the toddler lunch (a little early, so he can take an early nap)

12:00pm - Put the toddler down for a nap and make sure Mommy and the infant are "good-to-go"

12:05pm - Go outside and keep busy doing things around the yard

1:30pm - Look at watch, come inside, get a drink of water, take a quick shower, change clothes, apply deodorant

1:42pm - Kiss Mommy and the infant goodbye and walk out the door

2:10pm - Arrive at airport, circle twice waiting for plane to land, finally stop and check news on phone while waiting for mother-in-law

2:20pm - Help mother-in-law load suitcase in car

2:22pm - Leave airport, head home

BUT, Travis was not home that afternoon, as he was busy at work. So, I was on my own with a three-week-old infant and a toddler who had just started potty-training four days before.

Here's how it went down:

11:40am - Feed the toddler lunch (a little early, so he can take an early nap)

12:00pm - Infant starts screaming because she is hungry; toddler is needing supervision while on the potty

12:05pm - Toddler is finally in room, but running around without pants; infant is still screaming

12:10pm - Toddler is dressed in diaper, but jumps out of bed as soon as Mommy leaves the room; infant is finally getting her lunch

12:50pm - Infant is finished eating lunch and is sleeping in Mommy's arms; toddler is banging on the door of his room, asking to be let out

1:15pm - Infant is still sleeping; toddler is playing with toys and screaming in room - no nap thus far

1:17pm - Lay infant into carseat; run into bedroom, put on the same clothes I wore yesterday, apply chapstick; then let toddler out of room

1:18pm - Take toddler to potty where he pees

1:25pm - Make a snack for toddler to take in the car; infant is stirring, but still sleeping in car seat

1:35pm - Put toddler on potty again - nothing happens; put toddler into car with snack

1:40pm - Pick up carseat to put in car; infant starts screaming; take infant out, change diaper, put back in carseat

1:43pm - Load carseat into car; infant starts screaming again; toddler has finished snack and wants more

1:44pm - Go back inside to get more snack for toddler; infant is screaming at top of her lungs

1:45pm - Give toddler his second snack, realize car is hot; search hopelessly for keys

1:48pm - Finally give up looking for keys and dig spare keys out of the bottom drawer

1:49pm - Turn car on; take purple faced infant out of carseat, calm her down, and start to nurse; sing songs with toddler while he eats his snack and waits patiently in his carseat; resign self to fact that we are going to be late...

2:15pm - Infant finishes eating, is finally calm, and falls asleep; load her back into her carseat; toddler has finished snack (again)

2:16pm - Run inside, fill a glass of water, grab sunglasses; realize that clothes smell like milk, but don't have time to change; apply more chapstick

2:18pm - Get into driver's seat, put car in reverse and back out of garage

2:18pm and 5 seconds - stop the car in the driveway because toddler says he has to pee

2:18pm and 30 seconds - put toddler on potty in back of the car - he pees

2:22pm - Back in driver's seat, back car out of driveway, and get on the road to the airport

2:28pm - Toddler says he has to pee; pull over and stop on side of road;

2:33pm - Toddler is too distracted by cars to pee, so get loaded back into the car; infant stirs, but does not wake up

2:38pm - Toddler says he has to pee; pull over again on the side of the road

2:43pm - Toddler is too distracted by ocean and boats to pee, so get loaded back into car again

2:48 pm - Toddler says he has to pee; tell toddler he has to hold it until we get to the airport

2:54pm - Arrive at airport, see mom standing at baggage claim

2:55pm - Get out of car, greet mom, open back of car for toddler to use potty

2:56pm - Realize that toddler has soaked his carseat because he peed his pants; mom loads own suitcase into car; take toddler out of seat, strip clothes, sit him on the potty - he pees again

3:10pm - Finish cleaning out carseat and lay a towel on top; dig new underwear out of back seat for toddler to put on; get everyone loaded back into car to head back home...

I feel like this was some kind of initiation into the world of being a mom of two kids. It was awesome.

The good news is, none of our outings have been this dramatic since, and Barrett is getting much better at using the potty, so we don't have to stop every five seconds for him to go! It still takes us a while to get going anywhere, but we are getting into the swing of things.

I am so looking forward to taking them to my doctor's appointment next week... LOL :)

My two sweet babies!
